18 year old student creates bra that detects breast cancer

Breast cancer is what affects women the most in the world. The statistics are alarming, but maybe a bra can save our life. This is EVA proposal.

According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD): “One in nine women will have breast cancer and one third will die of the disease.” These numbers are horribly high.

Luckily the sooner you detect it, the greater the chances of survival. And if it depends on Julian Cantu, an 18-year-old Mexican student, the detection will be even simpler and precocious.

EVA is a bra. A wearable made to detect breast cancer at an early stage.

breast cancer

Cancerous tumors alter skin temperature due to increased blood flow in the region. The bra contains biosensors that measure the temperature, texture and color of the breasts and sends the information to an app that alerts the user if there is any persistent change.

Women should wear it for 60 to 90 minutes a week to get accurate measurements. This time, however, can not be spent on physical activities, because the increase in body temperature during the activity can generate a false positive result.

While still in the prototype stage, Eva won the GSEA,student entrepreneurship award, the $ 20,000 prize to to launch the project. The product is in beta phase of tests already with 5 thousand units produced.

Julian had personal motivation to create the product, his mother had breasts removed due to illness years ago. It is not long before the bra is marketed.

With or without the bra, the recommendation remains the same: women, take the self-examination and consult your doctor regularly. And who knows in the near future we will have more women winning the cancer. This is our desire for International Women’s Day.
